Experimental Builds
Tank builds from research passes over every Update 51 buff, debuff, passive and scribing script, looking for pure-class setups and subclass combinations that beat what the site runs today. Survival and sustain came first, then debuffs, then buffs, then mobility.

What we found
The biggest single gain is gear, not skills. Most current builds wear War Machine, which turns Ultimates into a few seconds of Major Slayer. Turning Tide puts Major Vulnerability on the boss for 10 seconds every time you bash after a block, and with Archdruid Devyric the boss takes 10% more damage about 78% of the fight instead of 45%. Every build here wears it.
The best line to borrow is the Sorcerer's Daedric Summoning. Bound Aegis gives Minor Resolve and Minor Protection just for being slotted and +50% block when cast, Regenerative Ward is a 10 second shield that feeds you and the group Minor Intellect and Endurance, and Daedric Protection takes another 5% off everything while either is up. Draconic Power is the best line for group buffs: Blood of the Elder Dragon and Elder Dragon.
Draconic Power is the strongest line to borrow for the group. The bar optimiser below put Blood of the Elder Dragon and Protect the Brood in the best build of every class: group Major Fortitude, Minor Courage, Minor Protection and Minor Brutality from two slots. It also found two cheap swaps that help almost every build: Ulfsild's Contingency with the Intellect and Endurance affix, and Leashing Soul with Vitality.
Class Mastery still matters for the Dragonknight. The pure Dragonknight is the only pure class that beats every subclass in the optimiser. For the other classes, a borrowed Draconic Power line was worth more than Class Mastery.

- Shadow Aegis Nightblade (subclassed) scores 66 against 60 for the current Nightblade (+6), with 82 for survival against 60.
Tidebreaker Dragonknight is the best tank on this page at 83, ahead of the Frost Aegis Sorcerer at 82. Builds that score below their current class page are still listed when they do one job much better, like survival or group buffs.
Builds
Pure class
Own three class lines, so Class Mastery stays. The changes are skills and gear.
Tidebreaker Dragonknight
Ardent Flame · Draconic Power · Earthen Heart
The pure Dragonknight with the bar optimiser's picks: Protect the Brood in place of Hearth and Home for group Minor Protection, Turning Tide in place of War Machine for a second Major Vulnerability source, and Ulfsild's and Leashing Soul scribed for sustain and Major Vitality. Class Mastery stays.
Mirage Nightblade
Assassination · Shadow · Siphoning
A pure Nightblade that swaps Trample for Mirage's Major Evasion and Minor Resolve, credits Elemental Blockade's Minor Breach, and wears Turning Tide for a second Major Vulnerability source. Class Mastery stays.
Subclassed
One or two lines borrowed from other classes. No Class Mastery.
Daedric Scales Dragonknight
Draconic Power · Ardent Flame · Daedric Summoning
A subclassed Dragonknight that swaps Earthen Heart for the Sorcerer's Daedric Summoning: Bound Aegis on top of Burnished Scales reaches the block cap, Heart of Flame keeps you topped up, and the group keeps every Draconic Power buff.
Frost Aegis Sorcerer
Daedric Summoning · Draconic Power · Winter's Embrace
The bar optimiser's best subclass tank: Bound Aegis from Daedric Summoning, the Dragonknight's Blood of the Elder Dragon and Protect the Brood, and the Warden's Expansive Frost Cloak for group Major Resolve. A Warden can run the same three lines.
Wyrmbone Necromancer
Bone Tyrant · Living Death · Draconic Power
Bone Tyrant and Living Death with the Dragonknight's Draconic Power: the Necromancer's layered defences plus group Minor Brutality, Minor Courage and Major Fortitude from Blood of the Elder Dragon.
Bone Aegis Necromancer
Bone Tyrant · Living Death · Daedric Summoning
The hardest tank to kill in our scoring. Bone Tyrant, Living Death and the Sorcerer's Daedric Summoning stack Spirit Guardian, Bound Aegis, Daedric Protection and Disdain Harm on top of the usual Major and Minor buffs.
Frostrune Arcanist
Soldier of Apocrypha · Draconic Power · Winter's Embrace
The bar optimiser's group-buff tank: Runeguard of Still Waters, the Dragonknight's Blood of the Elder Dragon and Protect the Brood, and the Warden's Expansive Frost Cloak. Group Major and Minor Resolve, Minor Protection, Major Fortitude, Minor Courage and Minor Brutality from one tank.
Bone Rune Arcanist
Soldier of Apocrypha · Daedric Summoning · Bone Tyrant
Soldier of Apocrypha with the Sorcerer's Daedric Summoning and the Necromancer's Bone Tyrant: Runic Aegis survival without Siphoning, plus Agony Totem's group Minor Protection and Major Cowardice on the boss.
Runic Aegis Arcanist
Soldier of Apocrypha · Daedric Summoning · Siphoning
Soldier of Apocrypha with the Sorcerer's Daedric Summoning and the Nightblade's Siphoning: far more personal survival and sustain than the pure Arcanist, and the same Minor Breach on everything that hits you.
Brood Shadow Nightblade
Shadow · Draconic Power · Daedric Summoning
The bar optimiser's best Nightblade: Shadow for Mirage and permanent Major Resolve, Draconic Power for the group buffs, and Daedric Summoning for Bound Aegis. The highest self-survival of any build we've scored.
Shadow Aegis Nightblade
Shadow · Siphoning · Daedric Summoning
The Nightblade tank with Assassination swapped for the Sorcerer's Daedric Summoning. It keeps Shadow Barrier, Dark Cloak and Siphoning Attacks, and adds Bound Aegis, Regenerative Ward and Daedric Protection.
Comparison
Every current build and every experimental build, scored together on the same model. The scores differ from the tier list's because this page weights debuffs above group buffs and counts every class line's passives, for every build.
How it's scored
This is the tier list model (value × weight × uptime for every effect in the Boss setup) with two changes, applied to every build in the table, current ones included:
- Category weights follow the research order: 50% self-survival and sustain, 30% enemy debuffs, 20% group buffs. The tier list uses 50 / 30 / 20 with group buffs second.
- Every class line's passives and sustain tools count, for every build that runs the skill line. The values are below; buff passives (Elder Dragon, Shadow Barrier, Spear Wall) count as the buff they grant.
- Subclassed builds keep 92% of their overall score, as on the tier list, because they lose Class Mastery. Pure-class builds here keep it.
- Mobility (Major Expedition, pulls, gap closers) only breaks ties: every build here has a pull from Wield Soul.
| A Soul Ablaze | 2.7 | 8% more healing received, two thirds of Major Vitality. |
|---|---|---|
| Elder Dragon (Health Recovery) | 1.5 | Up to 700 Health Recovery as you lose Health: about Minor Fortitude when it matters. |
| The Storm Voice | 1 | Health, Magicka and Stamina back on every Ultimate. |
| Heart of Stone | 2.7 | 2,974 Armor, always on: the same as Minor Resolve. |
| Blessing at the Peak | 1 | 3 Ultimate every 6 seconds while you cast Earthen Heart skills: half a Transfer. |
| Mountain Giant | 1 | 1,430 Stamina on the fully charged Heavy Attacks you already make for Archdruid Devyric. |
| Flourish | 4 | 20% Magicka and Stamina Recovery: more than Minor Intellect and Endurance together. |
| Savage Beast | 1 | 4 Ultimate every 8 seconds while you cast Animal Companions skills. |
| Bond with Nature | 0.5 | A small heal whenever an Animal Companions skill ends. |
| Maturation | 2.5 | Minor Toughness on allies you heal; tanks heal the group now and then. |
| Frozen Armor | 1.1 | 1,240 Armor per Winter's Embrace skill slotted. |
| Circumvented Fate | 3.5 | Minor Evasion for the group. |
| Aegis of the Unseen | 3 | 3,271 Armor while Runeguard or Cruxweaver Armor is on you. |
| Wellspring of the Abyss | 0.3 | 81 Health, Magicka and Stamina Recovery per Soldier of Apocrypha skill slotted. |
| Erudition | 3.6 | 18% Magicka and Stamina Recovery, always on. |
| Intricate Runeforms | 0.5 | Damage shields 10% stronger and cheaper. |
| Disdain Harm | 4.5 | 15% less damage over time while a Bone Tyrant ability is active; about a third of a tank's damage taken is over time. |
| Health Avarice | 2 | 3% more healing received per Bone Tyrant skill slotted; tanks slot two or three. |
| Last Gasp | 1.5 | 2,412 Max Health, always on. |
| Undead Confederate | 0.5 | 155 Health, Magicka and Stamina Recovery while Spirit Guardian is up. |
| Corpse Consumption | 1 | 10 Ultimate every 16 seconds when you consume a corpse. |
| Balanced Warrior | 0.5 | A little Armor per Templar skill slotted. |
| Restoring Spirit | 1 | 5% cheaper skills. |
| Prism | 1 | 3 Ultimate every 6 seconds while you cast Dawn's Wrath skills. |
| Refreshing Shadows | 3 | 15% Health, Magicka and Stamina Recovery, always on. |
| Dark Vigor | 1.25 | 5% Max Health per Shadow skill slotted. |
| Magicka Flood | 1 | 6% Max Magicka and Stamina. |
| Persistence | 2 | 18% cheaper next skill after every block, and tanks block all fight. |
| Unholy Knowledge | 1 | 6% cheaper skills. |
| Blood Magic | 0.5 | A small heal on every Dark Magic cast. |
| Daedric Protection | 5 | 5% less damage taken while a Daedric Summoning ability is active on you. |
| Power Stone | 1 | Ultimates cost 15% less, so you cast them more often. |
| Rebate | 0.5 | Magicka or Stamina back when a Daedric Summoning skill ends. |
| Capacitor | 0.5 | 141 Health, Magicka and Stamina Recovery. |
| Piercing Cold | 3 | Damage blocked +8% (see the tier list's block model). |
| Sacred Ground | 3.8 | Damage blocked +10% while you stand in your own Channeled Focus (see the block model). |
| Heart of Flame | 3 | Restores 12% of missing Magicka and Stamina twice and heals: the best panic sustain button in the game. |
| Dark Deal | 3 | 8,000 Health and 6,000 Stamina per cast; a 1 second cast, so it needs a safe window. |
| Spirit Guardian | 10 | 10% of your damage taken goes to the spirit instead while it's up. |
| Channeled Focus | 2 | 242 Magicka a second for 25 seconds on top of its Major Resolve. |
On the tier list as it stands, Dragonknight leads with 89; nothing on this page changes it.
How we pick skills
The Frost Aegis Sorcerer, Brood Shadow Nightblade and Frostrune Arcanist, and the current Tidebreaker Dragonknight bars, came from a bar optimiser rather than hand-picked swaps. It treats a bar as a set of effects and searches for the set worth the most, using the same effect values and uptimes as the comparison above, with three differences:
- Every effect costs a slot. The comparison credits every build with Revealing Flare, Resolving Vigor and the other universal skills for free; here they have to fit in the bar. Your fixed slots stay fixed (Goading Throw, Elemental Susceptibility, Elemental Blockade, Leashing Soul, Reviving Barrier), which leaves six skills, the back-bar Ultimate and Leashing Soul's affix to choose.
- A second source of the same buff adds little. Two sources combine as “up whenever either is up”, so a duplicate barely raises the score. Every pick also has to add at least 1 point on its own, which is how “no two skills doing the same job” is enforced. A heal over time and a damage shield count as jobs, so the first of each is worth a lot and a second almost nothing.
- Casts are limited. The six skills may take at most 0.3 casts a second, about what the current Dragonknight and Sorcerer bars use, so there's time left to taunt, block, bash and Heavy Attack.
It tries every pure class and every legal subclass (keep at least one own line, borrow up to two), 3,598 line combinations in all, and finds the exact best bar for each. Every passive of the chosen lines counts toward the line choice: always-on ones like Heart of Stone, ones that need a skill from the line on the bars like Flourish, and ones that grow with each skill slotted like Frozen Armor and Dark Vigor. Then it re-runs 200 times with every uptime, every effect's value and the category weights randomly varied, and counts how often each build comes out on top. A build that wins most re-runs doesn't depend on any one guess.
The pure Dragonknight comes out best overall in 69% of re-runs. Scores are out of 100 against the best any tank reaches in each category, on the optimiser's own scale, so they don't match the comparison table.

Every row uses Leashing Soul with the Vitality affix. Range is the 10th to 90th percentile across the re-runs. Classes whose winner takes under half the re-runs have near-ties: their second and third builds score within a point or two.
Also tested
Combinations we scored that didn't beat what the site already has.
- Storm Calling, Siphoning and Winter's Embrace lands level with the current Winter's Embrace subclass tank. Siphoning's sustain is great, but Storm Calling adds little a tank needs that Daedric Summoning doesn't do better.
- Other Sorcerer subclasses. Before the bar optimiser, every swap we tried lost to the pure Sorcerer. The closest, Dark Magic, Daedric Summoning and Draconic Power, has strong group buffs but loses Boundless Storm's Major Resolve and Calculated Defense. The optimiser then found the Frost Aegis Sorcerer, which keeps Daedric Summoning and borrows Winter's Embrace for group Major Resolve.
- Pure Sorcerer with Turning Tide in place of War Machine scores a point above the current Sorcerer: more debuffs, fewer group buffs. Too close to call, so it isn't a separate page.
- Pure Templar with Turning Tide in place of Powerful Assault also lands a point above the current Templar. Restoring Light, Dawn's Wrath and Draconic Power would score higher still, but it needs six skills for five slots; dropping either Radiant Aura or Protect the Brood leaves it level with the pure Templar.
- Warden. Turning Tide needs a bash, and the double ice staff Warden has no shield. Ice Fortress in place of Expansive Frost Cloak adds only Minor Protection, which every tank already gets elsewhere, and any subclass loses Tundra's Maw, the Class Mastery behind the Warden's Major Brittle.
- Pure Necromancer with Turning Tide scores a point lower: Glacial Colossus already covers Major Vulnerability, so War Machine is worth more there.
- Dragonknight with Winter's Embrace gives the best group buffs of any subclass we scored, but less survival than Daedric Scales.
- Templar with Dawn's Wrath, Restoring Light and Daedric Summoning has strong block and sustain from Sacred Ground and Bound Aegis, but loses Class Mastery and lands just below the pure Templar.
